Ring
Version 3.2 · Stefan Peichl
Description
Ring is a small utility that allows the palmtop to ring when a call is received on your cellular phone. In the debug mode, the program detects and measures EMI disturbances which can kill an IrDA connection ( read more about that problem here ). Freeware. The author's instructions
The setup is: 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit. In DEBUG mode, any detected EMI (electomagnetic interference) causes a click to make it audible. In addition, an error counter is incremented and the numer of occurred errors of the last second is displayed in the upper half of the screen, if there were any. The display stops, if no errors are detected. On the first line of the screen you will see the mean value per second of these errors. This value is important in order to find out, if a shielding of the palmtop has any effect. Additionally, on the first line you will also find the absolute number of framing and overrun errors of this run. These are only of statistical significance. In the lower half of the screen are the incoming characters displayed, as received by the UART. Any key you press is send out to the IR port and immediately received by the photo diode and hence echoed on the lower half of the screen. Use this feature to test, if a manipulation of the IR hardware had a negative effect on the IR receiver, which would result in no echo or a falsified echo. Indeed every echo also increments the error counter, because the software cannot now, if the character came in through the IR port or if it was induced by EMI. If you want to know, if a hardware manipulation of the palmtop had success in suppressing EMI but still allowing IR communi- cation, you should see no data coming in if a mobile phone is online, but any key you press on the palmtop should be echoed. During a test run, you may always press the space bar to reset all counters and start a new measuring. Pressing the Enter key brings you back to the 'ring' mode. Press ESC to quit the program. NOTE: Light sleep is disabled in DEBUG mode. Always quit the …

Send to my palmtop
The palmtop must be waiting before you press the button, or the transfer will fail. It is the palmtop that announces it is ready, not the other way round.
Your browser cannot talk to the serial port. Direct sending uses the Web Serial API, which only exists in Chrome, Edge and Opera on desktop — not in Firefox, Safari or any mobile browser.
Download the file with the button above and copy it to the palmtop your usual way.
