Steps
- Copy HAL.BAT, HYSTERIA.BAT, SOUND.EXE to A:\SOFT. They are DOS programs: run them from the DOS icon, or add A:\SOFT to the PATH in C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT to call them by name.
- The .ICN files are icons: they go in the same folder as their application.
Derived from the package contents and the 200LX conventions. It installs to A: on purpose: C: is a RAM disk and every byte there is memory taken from the system.
The author's instructions
QUICK START FOR HP100LX USERS The included batch files (.BAT) allow for immediate playback of the sample sound files on a HP100LX. Simply type "HYSTERIA" or "HAL" at the DOS prompt once Sound Play has been installed. The included SOUND.ICN can be used when attaching the sound files to the Application Manager. The same icon can be for different sounds (i.e: command lines or batch files) by first setting the path to point to sound.exe and tabbing to the icon selector. At this point the speaker icon will appear. Then, simply tab back to the path and set it to the appropriate command line or batch file (the icon will be retained provided you don't return to the icon selector). USING SOUND PLAY FROM DOS ON ANY PC Sound Play can be used from the DOS prompt by typing "sound" followed by the desired playback rate and the name of, or path to, the sound file to play. The playback rate is a positive number that determins the speed of playback. Using smaller numbers will ACCELERATE the playback while larger numbers will SLOW DOWN the playback. For slower machines (such as the HP100LX), playback rates of 3 or 4 will lead to correct playback speeds, on the other hand, a fast 486 machine may require values in excess of 90. You may need to try several values before you find one that is correct for your machine. The second parameter is the name, or complete path, to the sound file you want to play. For example, the following would let you play the sound HYSTERIA.SND (included) at a rate that is optimal for the HP100LX: sound 3 hysteria.snd That is, it will play the sound file entitled "hysteria.snd" with a playback speed of 3. You may have to alter the playback rate for optimal sound on your computer. CONVERTING EXISTING SOUND FILES TO SOUND PLAY FORMAT …
